A common psychological issue is if we are not happy with ourselves or in our own skin, then things tend to spiral downwards quite rapidly and we can end up doing nothing to improve the situation.   • Helping to prevent the onset of mental disorders.

In short the reports of the benefits of physical activity as regards mental or physical issues are so extensive it would take me years to list them.

Do very little to improve the situation. we tend to lead much more sedentary lifestyles with everything becoming more and more accessible at our fingertips. Physical exercise tends to be pushed to the back burner. Pressures of our working life also tend to lead to less exercise. Too often we tend to look at exercise as too time-consuming and too hard.

In fact when we are training, particularly in a case where health issues are involved we need to promote the exercise and nutritional aspects to the fore and to build our working and social lives around them!

How Do We Provide Self-Motivation:

Self-motivation is possibly one of the hardest hurdles to overcome. So how do we do it?

One way is to join a class. This is my personal favourite. When you are in a class with others in a similar situation as you it provides a group mentality. Also if you have a good teacher who spends some time correcting any errors you may make provides a sensation of belonging. The other thing about a structured class especially if you are learning movement is you can bring the lesson home with you to practice.

The toughest thing about joining a class is leaving home after a day’s work or early in the morning to participate. However, when you start the class you are always glad you did.

If you decide that the gym is the way forward for you, make sure that you use the services of a personal trainer to start. Your personal trainer should provide a plan tailored to your specific needs.

One of the issues with gyms is that if you have a low opinion of yourself they can be a daunting place to start! I personally have not been to one gym anywhere in the world where they do not have the body beautiful people walking around which does not promote the sense of belonging. This aspect plus the self-discipline needed to leave the house or work in all weathers are the reasons more people give up on the gym than stick with it.

Working under your own steam is possibly the hardest route you can take! Ask yourself honestly. How many times have you said to yourself I’m going to start tomorrow, Or I’m going to start next week for sure? It’s difficult for the best of us even with many years of training behind us to have the self-motivation to set aside a fixed time daily to get down on the floor or to get on the elliptical machine and exercise. Tiredness or family always seems to take over.

A Little Shopping Therapy:

I don’t care what anyone says to the contrary, the pheromones released by a little retail therapy can make all the difference to your mindset. If you decide to go to the gym or to a class to train. Why not look the part?  Fitting in with the rest of the class or at the gym or feeling the part is important for your mindset. Also as we know wearing the correct footwear is vital ( You can’t do Zumba in clogs) providing support and cushioning. And wearing the right clothing is also important as regards support for any injuries etc.    So go on spoil yourself a bit.
