I started as a long-distance runner at the age of 12. At 18, I went on to Martial Arts, where I practiced traditional arts, competing until the age of 30. From this age onward I was involved in pure self-defense until now. I now also practice TaiChi.
So when I was running way back in the 70s I wore Dunlop Green flash (remember them) inappropriate footwear for distance running, I ended up with back and knee injuries. When I started in Martial Arts, I started with traditional styles that further exasperated these injuries, although at the time I did not know this.
I stopped competing in contact martial arts at the age of 30, I moved on to less traditional styles which although were very exacting, were easier on the joints, Incorporating yoga stretches into the system, etc.
At the age of 57, I more or less stopped doing external martial art classes and concentrated on my training looking for and adding new things to my health and fitness regime and my fighting repertoire. At about this time while training, more or less 2018 my knee gave out! unwilling to believe, due to my level of fitness, it was anything more than a strain, I ignored it.
After a year or so my knee still had not recovered, so I finally went for an MRI. I was more than a little shocked to find out the extent of the damage I had. Meniscus tears partial cruciate ligament tear and Osteoporosis and would need a knee replacement within a couple of years. HOW was I still able to walk? My years of training it turned out, had stood me in good stead because the muscles were in good shape.
Since this diagnosis I have dedicated my spare time to research, finding the best exercises, the best supplements, the best nutrition to at least delay having major knee surgery, if not to prevent it entirely.
